Essay: The Scent of Apple as diaspora Literature
Home: about
longing and coming home. Life is a journey to discover one's identity and a
memory of longing for home, looking for work to survive. Longing is not something that can be caused
intentionally. Even though it is true that longing will be felt, a distance
will immediately be created, which is what Celestino Fabia experienced.
For the migrants
who are trying their luck abroad, whether they are earning a living by working
or who are improving their minds by pursuing education – they are skilled
longings, who have tasted every liquid of longing down to the last drop.
Frequently they have to endure a passionate longing for their hometown -
missing home and its people.
One example of
the diaspora in the story is the protagonist's struggle with his cultural
identity. He still maintains his habit of selling the apples he has, even
though he does not sell all of them. The smell of apples reminded him of his
hometown, the Philippines. His heart experienced a feeling of longing. He still
has time to appreciate his culture, where he still sees the good side of
Filipino women who are so good, dress neatly and politely, go to church
diligently and are faithful. Home always calms us from various problems we
experience. The house always has a way of providing relief from various
fatigues in overseas areas - because inside it there is a family that exudes an
aura of boundless love. His small family, his wife, Ruth, loved him so much,
cared for him and accompanied him when he was sick with great patience. His
son, Roger, goes to school diligently every day and is a good child. Ruth is
quite different from other American women, this is what makes Celestino love
her so much, she is so loyal, she is not selfish with herself, or if she looks
at it from a cultural perspective, maybe she has left her husband, but Ruth is
different from the others.
This situation
then helped Celestino to remain enthusiastic even in difficult situations,
illness. Furthermore, the protagonist's interactions with other Filipino
immigrants highlight the sense of community and shared experience among
diasporic individuals. They bond over nostalgic memories of home and support
each other in navigating the challenges of adapting to a new country. This
sense of solidarity is a common theme in diaspora literature, emphasizing the
importance of cultural connections and belonging in unfamiliar surroundings.
Short stories
about the diaspora experiences show the struggles, joys and emotional nuances
of movement and cultural adaptation. The vivid storytelling and rich
characterizations offer a touching exploration of identity, belonging, and the
longing for home that remains alive. Home is not just a place, but a feeling
that resides within, wherever we go.
